Hello Everyone!
By now you must have realized that there has been no new posts from our Event Coordinator Tom Barker.
Alas, are wonderful prosaic author of so many of our blogs had his last day working at HHN on Friday, August 27, 2010. For the past year Tom has held the Event Coordinator Intern position with HHN, which was funded by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation. After the goodbye party of delicious cupcakes, we tearfully waved good bye as the big guy went out the door into a future that is full of excitement and adventure. He is going to be concentrating on his company Wormsplint and he is also planning to run for council. We will miss him at HHN, but he has promised to send us an occasional blog just to keep his hand in.

From all of us at HHN, Good luck, good bye, cheer loud, cheer long and don't forget to go fishing Tom!!

Fuzzy Feeling Friday - Poetry Corner: Falling Into Place!!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! You will not believe what I have seen travelling back from the Muskokas. Keep in mind that we are still in August, but I have seen some of the trees and ferns changing colours!! It blew my mind to see the Authentic Autumn Auburn's already! So with this in mind, I have been inspired to create an Autumn themed Fuzzy Feeling Friday - Poetry Corner!

Autumn Sun Always Awakens

As you gaze outside through the window of life

Many things have come to pass

As with the Seasons, we all change

Leaving only reflections in the glass

But t'is the Season of the Autumn Sun

That brings with it Life anew

The brief slumber through Winter's darkness

Springs forth new growth for me and you

Sweet Autumn Sun Caress my skin

Cleans me Soulful Soap

Despite the struggles I may endure

Instill in me new hope!

Go Leafs Go!

The Fall brings with it lots of colours

But the two colors I eagerly await

Are those of a corporate Franchise

The Leaf's that shoot and skate!

White & Blue shine on through

Stand tall as you prepare

To battle through the season

In Stanley's Cup we shall share!

Let The Sun Shine Through

Let the Sun shine through the darkest of days

"Grey Skies Are Gonna Clear Up..." I Say Put On Your Rain Coat, as well as, A Happy Face!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! I am debating whether or not to start building an Ark with all this rain. The problem is we are so close to the, dare I say the nasty 6 letter word: "winter," that I may have to make some altercations to it so that it is capable of handling water in all its forms! But really we cannot complain. The Berries are bountiful; the forest fires are few and far between (at least here in Northeastern Ontario); and the Greenscapes have never been greener. As the world's most famous amphibian once put it: "It's not easy being green!" But with all this rain, I say it can't be any easier!!!!

On a side note: I went to the doctors the other day to have my stomach examined. I explained to him that I have been experiencing some severe pains in my stomach, but it seems most aggravated in the mornings. The doctor, after minutes of intense beard stroking, asks me what my main diet consists of. I told him that, lately I have been dabbling and experimenting in a variety of new cuisines, including Frog Legs. Without hesitation, he looked up over the rims of his glasses and says: "After your next meal of Frog Legs, when you feel the stomach pains coming on, take ten minutes and Rub it... Rub it! If that doesn't work take these pills!"

Back to hockey! The world Hockey Summit is underway in Toronto. Next on the agenda is to discuss injuries; with the main focus being placed on the concussion pandemic. It will be interesting to see what will come of these discussions. I will be sure to keep you posted!

There have been a few more signings and trades around the league. Things seem to be settling in prior to the start of hockey camps. There is one retirement to mention: Aaron Ward is retiring after 13 years in the League! We wish you a happy retirement Mr. Ward! I am anxiously awaiting the start of the 2010-2011 Season with the new "reformed" Leafs. Could this be the season to remember? Only time will tell!

Fresh from the Rumour Mill: Is Luongo giving up his "C" (Team Captain Position) to Henrik Sedin? The teammates are both stellar players on and off the ice, and are great team leaders. However things work out for the Canucks, all I know is that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the Western Conference.

That is all I have to report from the NHL front. Here at HHN, things are going swimmingly; nothing new to report. Don't forget to take advantage of these hazy, lazy, rainy days of summer and stop on by! There is always something to do at HHN!

The Fog Has Escaped My Mind and is Now Engulfing Kirkland Lake!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! Top of the Mornin' to ya! Looks like we are in the thick of things!!!! We go from experiencing Kansas-like weather last week (with tornado warnings) to Jolly Ol' English Fog! It seems as though the fog that usually caresses the grey matter the scientists have identified as my brain has temporarily exited my cranium and is out enjoying a cool KL morning. I see it is dissipating as I write, maybe we will even see the sun! It has been so long since I last saw the sun, will I recognize it if I do see it?!?! Like meeting an old friend for the first time in years, I am all nervous and sweaty! Pardon me a moment while I stand under the hand dryer!

As for news from the Hockey front, the NHL is looking into restructuring its regular-season tiebreaking system for the 2010-2011 Season. It appears that the League will be looking at using regular time and overtime victories only - as the deciding factor for tiebreakers. Shootout wins will be excluded from the tiebreaking process (at least for the time being - so it seems). I will give you a better breakdown of the rule when more information becomes available.

Hockey Canada has announced the addition of six new VP's to the organization; one of which is a Sudbury, ON, native and a graduate from Laurentian University. Paul Delparte graduated with a Bachelor's of Commerce Degree specializing in Sport Administration. He has been named as Vice President Finance and Administration. Congratulations Mr. Delparte! Northeastern Ontario strikes again! It just goes to show that we all have potential: "If we but put our mind to the grind than we shall find success of some kind!" - A Voice In My Head.

As for HHN, nothing new to report! I will keep you posted on any Celeb Stop By's!

Fuzzy Feeling Friday - Poetry Corner: Country Flavor: Chuck'm a Puck'm

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! Let me declare our "F" to the power of three session Officially Started! Yeah! Today's Fuzzy Feeling Friday - Poerty Corner is inspired by a song I did not know exsisted until about one month ago. This song seems to be quite a hit and I must admit that I, too, find it quite catchy. The Zac Brown Band did a fantastic job putting together this highly heartwarming hit: " Sic'em On a Chicken." For those that have not yet heard this toe tapping treat, I strongly encourage you go out and buy it! It will change your life !!! Or at least your perception of the farmer and chicken relationship! A Puck's Lament

I am a Puck and I declare
I am one solid piece, no room for air
I hit the ice with the goal in mind
And when I stop, the Goal I find
But the life of a puck is not all that great
As I am tossed around while the players skate
Slapped around and shot into boards
Like marionette without its chords
I am manipulated in so many ways

Back in the day, when the children would play
And a puck could not be found.
Being light-hearted, after the horse farted
They would collect what was left on the ground!

With the help of the cold, it would take on the mould

"Cabbage is A Word I Use To Describe... The Type of Weather System That We Are Experiencing Outside"

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! If there is one word to sum up how I feel based solely on the effects the weather is having on me, it would be: Cabbage! I feel like a cabbage, wishing the rain would just leaf me alone! I apologize for such a terrible pun this early in the morning. I solemnly swear to never inflict such carnage on you ever again! Or at least for the remainder of this blog! Now back to business!

News from the NHL, well, it is kind of slow at the moment. The players are beginning to take the ice in preparation for training camps that will be starting within the next few weeks. Some players are still finding themselves being shuffled around - like Romo (from Tampa Bay Lightning) and Desjardins (Montreal Canadian Club) who have been swapped for one another. But it seems for now all major transactions have halted.

If I may, I would like to attempt to jump from the Ice to Diamonds for a moment. Our Beloved Toronto Blue Jays are only 10 games back from playoff spot! This is something deserving of acknowledgement seeing as how the Jays have undergone some serious injury challenges and are still winning more games than they are losing! Not to mention the fact that they are a Young club pulling together and putting up some impressive numbers in a short period of time - including leading the majors in Home runs as a Team! They are putting forth a valiant effort and need to be commended on this! Go Jays Go!!!

Yet another Blog has come and gone, leaving us to sigh and yawn. But all will change in two days, you'll see, with a serving of Fuzzy Feeling Friday for you and me!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! Can I get a show of hands from those who knew that most of Northeastern Ontario and South to Toronto was under a Tornado watch Sunday, please? I thought it was odd when I saw my grandma come flying on by in her rocking chair and did not stop for a chat. After a quick consultation with Grandma's travel agent and a visit to the Weather Network's website, the obvious then became clear, Grandma was not going to let the tornado tell her what to do and rode it out! Yet another wacky weather weekend to be added to the 2010 summer calender!

In other unrelated news, Mike Comrie (from the Edmonton Oilers) married pop icon Hilary Duff (the girl from all your "little sister's" posters) this past weekend. I would like to wish the newly Wed's congratulations and wish them a very happy marriage!

Keeping on happy hockey news, the "Kaberle Conundrum" is over with his "No Trade Claus" back into effect. Tomas Kaberle is still officially sporting the White and Blue! Between this news and the Hilary Duff news, I am all worked up! I will need a moment to compose myself before I can continue... there we go, thank you!

As for Hockey Heritage North, the Celebrity Watch is still on! I will keep you posted on any new developments. With the way the 2010 Summer of Surprise has been going, you never know what lurks around the proverbial corner!

As everyone prepares for the upcoming season, we here at HHN would like to wish you all a safe and successful season.

The Anthem

The Rush

I dart outside slamming all doors, jump into the car, start the engine, it roars
Starting to see the morning light, Tire spin as I drive out of sight
It is morning practice and I'm late again, the number 1 goalie they will begin to complain
I rush through the rink to meet with the team as we all prepare for the morning routine
As I swing open the door who should appear, but little old me and all of my gear
I think to myself, could I be this late, have they all finished, have I got the right date
Then all of a sudden, it all becomes clear - why I was the only one standing right here!
It is our day off, for tomorrow we play, the coach likes us to rest before each game day!

The Surprises Keep On Coming!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! This morning I had to fight with myself to get myself out of bed! The birds are singing, the sun is shining, yet it seems all I yearn for is one more, brief, interview with Sandman in the comfort of my own "Dreamy Time" vessel! Can beds be written off as an office expense? My argument - that's where all my good ideas are hatched! But I am quickly reminded of the extreme level of "Surprise" activity occurring within the confines of Hockey Heritage North, and like a bull in a China Shop, I ever so gingerly made my way through the morning routine and landed myself at my desk!

Yesterday afternoon - that was Tuesday, August 10, 2010 (for those on Holidays) - we had another guest drop by unexpectedly. Our Honored Member, Brent Tremblay, who played with the Washington Capitals, dropped by to take a peek at the facility while he had some free time. He is teaching at a Hockey Camp, here in Kirkland Lake, this week. Needless to say, it was a very pleasant surprise! Thank you for stopping by Mr. Tremblay! We hope to see you again sometime soon!

As for NHL news, Kovalchuk is back on the free agent marker after the arbitrator ruled in favor of the NHL's rejection of the contract between Ilya Kovalchuk and the New Jersey Devils due to breach of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. I would like to take this time to mention that we are almost two months away from the start of the NHL regular season! This is extremely exciting! I am overwhelmed with anticipation to watch my Leafs hit the ice and take the Cup this year - as discussed with the Sandman last night in our eight hour interview! The Blue & White are looking good and I will cheer them on regardless! "GO LEAFS GO!"

Sweet Corn and Gravy, What a Way to End a Week!?!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! If I may, I would like to begin today's blog with a recap of Thursday's and Friday's Events! I am still beside myself! Thursday, as you are aware, I was able to meet one of Kirkland Lake's most famous people of all time: The Great Dick Duff. For those wondering what he is like, I will try to do my best to describe him. He is: 1 Part Indiana Jones - great sense of adventure; 1 Part George Carlin - fantastic story teller and sense of humor; and 1 Part Santa Claus - heart of Gold and always giving! He is simply amazing! That was my Thursday, now comes Friday!

It was an ordinary Friday. We carried through the morning and part of our afternoon with our regular routines; when all of a sudden, this Giant White Bear comes walking through our door and begins making himself at home. Upon closer inspection, the bear appeared to be wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey and went by the name of Carlton. It turned out to be the Official mascot for the Toronto Maple Leafs! He came to HHN to visit and do a Bio on our very own Dick Duff. And during this taping, guess who shows up, none other than than Dick Duff! A second opportunity to chill with the Duff-ster! Mind Blowing!!!!!! Dear readers, it goes to show you never know what will happen while visiting Hockey Heritage North.

Now for a quick recap on the developments in the NHL. The arbitrator hired for the Ilya Kovalchuk case will render his/her verdict later today on whether or not the NHL can legally void the new contract between Ilya and the New Jersey Devils. In other news, Chris Chelios has announced his retirement as an NHL player, but may take up a management position. And Mike Modano has signed a 1 Year contract with the Detroit Red Wings after playing for the North Stars/Stars organization his entire 20 year career.

Well folks, as Jim Morrison and the Doors once put it: "This is the end ... My only friend, the end!" At least for this Blog!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! This mornings title is inspired by a song currently racing through my head. It is of the Classic Rock Genre, and if my memory serves me correctly, I believe it was by a band that enjoyed letting their hair down, rocking and rolling all night and partying every day! But I digress.

Today is a special day for me for it is my mother's birthday! Happy Birthday Mom! I hope you have a great day! May it be filled with laughter, enjoyment and lots of cake! You are going to share right? And to anyone else celebrating a Birthday today, I, and the management and staff of Hockey Heritage North, would like to wish you a splendid birthday! For those not celebrating a birthday today the Mad Hatter (Disney's Alice in Wonderland) seemed to put it best: "A Very Merry Unbirthday to you! "

As for developing stories from the NHL front, nothing to report! Mind you, if we can quickly step over to the MLB side of things I can throw a quick shout out to the Toronto Blue Jays for their extraordinary efforts over the New York Yankees these last two games. With game three scheduled for this afternoon, I am keeping my fingers crossed that Shawn Marcum can help make quick work of the Yankees, sweeping the series. This would help the Blue Jays move closer to Playoffs. GO JAYS!

I just received confirmation that the Legendary Dick Duff will be stopping in HHN tomorrow for a brief visit. The time has yet to be confirmed, but he is expected to be here around 1:00pm. Mr. Dick Duff, we are looking forward to your arrival! Safe travels!

Cloudy With A Pint of Blueberries!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! Waking up this morning and seeing the dark and gloomy sky only meant one thing to me... plump and juicy blueberries! I don't know about you, but blueberries are sooooo delicious, and they are extremely versatile. You can eat them plain, with milk and sugar, in muffins/pancakes/cakes, you can make syrups and dessert toppings, as well as, create many beverages from this tiny, nutritious, fibre-filled fruit! Not to mention their health promotional applications with links to improving venous and arterial blood flow and antioxidant potentials.

Wow!!! Something just hit me! I don't know if any of you remember the Gummi Bears cartoon show. In that show the Gummy Bears would take a swig of the Gummy Bear Juice made from Gummy Berries and they would gain a wealth of health. Maybe this cartoon was a way for the Government to introduce us to the healthy powers of the Blueberry!? Mind blowing isn't it?! Now back to the Blog!

An update on Kovalchuk story: the NHLPA has filed a grievance against the NHL. The waiting game is now on regarding the agreement of both parties on one mediator for the case. Once a mediator has been agreed upon, the mediator has 48 hours to render a verdict - or so I've read. Apart from that, life in the NHL is the same: a couple free agent signings, the unveiling of the next winter classic locations & teams - Washington Capitals vs. Pittsburgh Penguins in Pittsburgh, and some bickering between opposing players.

As for Kirkland Lake's Western Front - aka Hockey Heritage North - I think Steven Tyler (Areosmith) puts it best: "It's the same ol' story, same ol' song and dance!" So keep on rocking!

Is No News Newsworthy?

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! I would like to begin this blog by stating the Sun and I are back on talking terms. After a few days of total silence, I decided to step up and be the bigger person and apologize for the comments I made the other day regarding the Sun taking a bit of a holiday. It turned out that the Moon needed a helping hand fixing its orbital motor, so the Sun asked Ms. Precipitation to take care of things while the Sun was away, thus, the rainy weather this past week! Now the Sun is back and shining ever so brightly this morning! It looks to be a great week ahead!

As for the NHL, things seem to be at a standstill. The only major story topping NHL news is the Ilya Kovalchuck saga. For those unaware of the Kovalchuck story, he was offered a 17 year, $102 million dollar contract with the New Jersey Devils. There seems to be some concern on the part of the National Hockey League, so the deal was rejected. Now Kovalchuck is awaiting the NHLPA's decision on whether or not it will file a grievance. Apart from that nothing else to report!

Hockey Heritage North is holding steady with no major news report. I would like to take this time to mention that HHN will be undergoing some renovations in the Month of September. This will be affecting availability and Rentals for the Month of September. As it stands, the Information Centre and HHN Store will remain open, but this is subject to change. I will be sure to keep you posted as September approaches.

Fuzzy Feeling Friday- Poetry Corner: Sunny Side Up!

I awoke this morning to my sister and 3 friends home from Ottawa for the weekend and received news that I will have two more brothers coming by with their significant others. Not to mention my dear friend Patrick is making his way up from the depths of the Muskokan Heartland to try his hand at fishing the great KL waters! Patrick, we're gonna be roommates again! Aren't you excited?! Yeah!!!! So despite the grey and gloomy skies that are currently blanketing Kirkland Lake's horizon, the sun is shining ever so bright inside my heart! Patrick, Patrick, Patrick my friend

When you come to visit, Fun knows no end
With your Irish Charm you make people smile
And their memories of you last a long while
The stories you tell have me in stitches
If you ever wrote them down you'd be rolling in riches
Your addiction to KFC Chicken does have some concern
When you yell for the Colonel as you toss and turn

With a Heart of Gold you live out each day

Taking care of family and friends as you work and play

Patrick, Patrick, Patrick my friend

May our friendship flourish 'til we're cranky old men!

Mr. Rink & the Sun

It was a midsummer morning when Mr. Rink came to play

But noticed his ice would melt right away

Puzzled he left without saying a word

Until he was stopped by a wise little bird

"Where are you going with such a long face?"

The rink said sadly: "Back to my place.

The Summer Sun is too hot the kids cannot skate

So back to the Barn where I will sit and will wait"
"Before heading back, you should reconsider
To match up your surface with that of the weather"
Mr. Rinks eyes lit right up for a purpose was found
Providing fun and excitement for children year round!
The Moral of the story is to take time to think
Before you pass judgement on a summertime rink!

New "Leafs" On Life!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! How many of you woke up this morning to find a note where the sun usually hangs out, stating "Gone Fishing"? Waking up to the sound of rain made the ol' wake up routine that much harder this morning! I guess I really can't complain about the rain. I mean, we are fortunate not to have to worry about forest fire alerts and the wild berries should be plentiful! Mmm wild berries... Patti, have I mentioned lately that I love you? (I enjoy picking berries about as much as I enjoy eating porcupine quills! So I leave the picking to my sister and she leaves the eating - involuntary - to me!).

After setting up for a few rentals this morning, I managed to make my way to my favourite sports websites to get caught up in all the news in the ever-evolving world of sports. Making my way through the hockey section I was paying close attention to my Leafs when I noticed the increased level of activity on the players' acquisition front that has been occurring this off-season. As of this morning, the Leafs have EIGHT new faces on the roster! AMAZING! The even crazier part is the Leafs Nation is on standby for perhaps one or two more major deals! INCROYABLE! I cannot wait to watch the Leafs in action come Fall 2010! Mr Burke, you make good cookies, I mean teams!

So as I wrap up this edition of cyber babble, I would like to extend my Warmest Wednesday Wishes to each and every one of you!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! As I slowly diffuse through the week's worth of work and emails, I find myself thoroughly enjoying the familiarity and comforts of home sweet home. With my coffee in hand I am ready to face the day with eagerness and excitement. After experiencing numerous surprises at Camp Quality (and after Camp surprises) I have come to the realization that everyday holds new experiences which need recognition and full embracing. Like a kid with his hook and worm in the water anticipating the next fish bite, I too wait in great anticipation to see what today brings!

Camp Quality was a HUGE success! We had over 53 campers come and experience a week of fun and frivolity. We shared lots of laughs, shed a few tears and ate like kings and queens. It was hard to see the children off as we parted ways after camp, but the memories will help get me through the next year! Campers, if you are reading this, thank you so much for the memories and for letting me share this past week with you!

I am looking forward to continuing my adventure here with Hockey Heritage North and providing you, my dear readers, with epic blogging material! Please stay tuned!

Lost in the Woods

Hide and Go Seek is a great game to play
When everyone playing all knows the way
Knowing who is playing is also the key
When my camper played, he never told me
So in a great panic, my mind all a fluster
Searching great depths, some never seen by a duster
So deep to the woods I now set out
Frantically looking, I stop and shout out:
"Where are you Jimmy? Can you hear my voice?"
Remembering he can't hear for he has not that choice!
For Jimmy is deaf and cannot hear a sound
Now lost in the woods I wait to be found
When off in the distance I see a small light
As the shadow approaches, Jimmy's now in my sight
With a look of relief I hug him and sign
Where have you been? Are you doing just fine?
He smiles and he signs, to the bathroom I went
You know where we are? Just behind our own tent
I look at Jimmy with toilet paper in hand
Without hesitation I know where I stand!
The moral of the story, always keep in mind
Watch where you walk for more than a child you may find!

Berries and Bears

Berries and bears are like a couple you know
Where one is hiding the other will show
Never distant for long they both can be found
Nestled together right close to the ground
With a short season they do what they can
To nourish each other that is the great plan

Blog of Presents Future: Part 2!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! This blog comes to you compliments of the Nurses Station. It is Day 4 of Camp and I am embarrassed to say that I have been out smarted by a 9 year old. Have you ever heard the saying: "Leaves of three, let them be!"? Well, I now know that it is more than just words of caution, they are words to live by. I have also discovered that when a nine year old dares you to go in the woods to get the ball, he is not really afraid of snakes and bears. He knows what poison Ivy looks like and is well versed in the "side effects" it has on human skin! Way to go little guy! I am proud of you! I am also proud of the fact that despite the leafy obstacles, I did complete: OPERATION BALL RETRIEVAL and I shed only a couple tears!

Apart from my battle with Mother Nature's Queen of the Itch, everything is going great! The children here are having a blast, as am I! We have had our Cartoon Costume Party, as well as, the Red Carpet Extravaganza! And today we are looking at having our Memorial Service with Luminaries honoring all those we have physically lost to cancer! It is quite a moving experience, but as the children put it - one of the most important and revered activities of camp!

I hope you have taken advantage of the gorgeous weather! Well it is gorgeous here anyways!!!! Don't forget to stop on by and take a tour of HHN! Let me know how the place is doing in my absence! Well, it is time for my Calamine Lotion Rub down and Antihistamine cocktail! Kind of like being at the Spa!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! I am currently away on a secret assignment passed on to me by the Canadian Commission of CHUBBY Agents (Charming Handsome Uncanny Brave Brilliant Yodelers). Yes folks, I am a Secret Agent! Just kidding, I am away at Camp Quality Northern Ontario helping provide support for the Campers. Camp Quality is a volunteer based International Organization providing children with cancer (currently undergoing treatment or in remission) and their families with support services and programs. One such program is the Summer Camp Program whereby children, between the ages of 4 and 18, are able to come to camp for a week and just be kids again! This also provides the parents/caregivers the opportunity to have a week to themselves, taking time to work on aspects of their own lives that may need nurturing. Unfortunately, I will not have access to the Internet while I am here; so, I am writing you from the past regarding the future at the present time! It is a mind blowing experience! So at about this time I am heading to the first activity of the day after eating my weight in bacon, eggs, sausage, and toast! Things are going swimmingly! So far I am injury free and all the kids are having a blast! As for Hockey Heritage North, the doors are open and our Guest Services Representatives are eagerly awaiting your presence!

Fuzzy Feeling Friday - Poerty Corner Presents: Mmm Pie-etry!

As my consciousness slowly progresses to a functional level, I am swiftly reminded of my culinary treat last night as part of the "And Out of the Blue - How Do You Do" Family Dinner. It was sinfully succulent! We had BBQ burgers and Hot Dogs with salad, but to top it all off my brother-in-law and sister brought pies!!!!! It was not until last night that I was reminded how delectable a pie really is! With the raspberry and the apple pie flavors still vividly dancing on my taste buds, I bring you: Mmm Pie-etry!

The Dilemma

Hockey & Pie went for a romp around the Mulberry Bushes
All was well until the bell and Pie began his pushes
"Why oh why do the players avoid me as if I were the Plague?"
Hockey responds: "Well on the ponds their bellies begin to drag!
You see you are delicious and no one can walk away
With one quick bite they lose their sight and by the pie plate they will stay!"
"A solution to this is simple you see" The Pie said with a smile
You'll find soon, a smaller spoon will last them a long while.
And less of the pie will have to die while it makes its final trip
And the players will last and skate quite fast for little will bear on the hip!"
As Hockey & Pie went for a romp around the Mull berry Bushes
A solution was sought and a solution they got without Pie getting the smushes!

Never Ending Pie

Oh, 3.14, the rest of your number I cannot retain
There are so many of them why am I to be blamed?
You captivate, you calculate, you fill the entire screen
But your crust and tasty filler is never to be seen.

"We're Talking 'bout a ... Heat Wave!"

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! As I rolled myself over this morning hoping the sheets would not cling to me like cellophane to left over birthday cake, I slowly opened my eyes to see the sun gently shining in through my window reminding me that he is still there and it is going to be another scorcher of a day! "Great!" I sarcastically mumbled to myself. Don't get me wrong, the sun is "great" but can we turn down the heat just a bit?! Glistening like a pig on a spit over an open fire, I sluggishly make my way to the land of Irish Spring and Running Streams to commence my day!

Once outside, I realize that it is not as bad as I was anticipating. There is a gentle breeze providing refuge from the dry heat of the sun, but the day is early. So I am sitting here at my desk desperately hoping for a Mid-July snowstorm to help cool things off. In the meantime I will try my best to stay cool - maybe the boss will let me sleep here tonight where we have cool air circulation! Hmm, its worth a shot!

Another Case of the Mondays!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! This morning my boss came into my office to find me sleeping. I quickly corrected her on her observations! "I was not sleeping, but rather practicing an ancient form of meditation that has been passed down through thousands of generations. It is called: Mondaimomant! It is a transitional meditation practice that helps to reintroduce the "being" back into the routine of the work week." To which she replied: "I will introduce you to an ancient form of intellectual motivation: Justgetbacktoworkie which is often accompanied by Noworknopay!" I get the message!

Canada Day has come and gone! And much like Christmases of the past, I managed to score some free stuff from a "Jolly" man dressed in red! The HHN Beach Party was a great success with Bad Sugar rockin' the grounds. Darren Puppa's Q & A and Autograph session went without a hitch! All great news for the community of Kirkland Lake and Hockey Heritage North! Thank you so much for everyone that attended! I will keep you posted on all the upcoming events from the HHN Home-front!

So, what a whirlwind of a weekend?! I am sure a great deal of you can attest to that! And what a start to the beginning of the week?! I am definitely experiencing a severe "Case of the Monday's" and for any of you that are having the same experience, I extend my warmest condolences and invite you to join me (in spirit) at your favorite coffee hole to help ward off this weighted and draining Monday experience! Better make that medium coffee an Extra Large!

I am smaller than an ant
Slightly bigger than a flee
But when I am around

The only reason we flies come back

Will There Be Cake??

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! As I look out my window this morning, I see a dull and gloomy grey sky with intermittent rain interrupting what little moments of sunbursts we have. Looking for ways to fight off the foreboding effect that I am experiencing, like the first blast of cold water from the shower head in every morning shower, I am quickly reminded to "snap out of it" the boss is in and you have work to do! I am also reminded that tomorrow will bring Sunshine. I am no meteorologist, nor do I want to be! Trying to predict the weather is like trying to predict the winning horse! You have all the options in front of you, but how will things play out? The Sunshine I am referring to is the National Pride I share with fellow Canadians, for tomorrow is our Nations Birthday!

As my childhood innocence slowly dissipates with my introduction into the "real world" I am reminded that not everyone is able to take the day off and participate in Canada Festivities. I would like to take this time to salute those that have to work tomorrow! I wish you a pleasant day and may you find time to celebrate in your own special way!

As for my plans, my slate is clean at the moment. I tend to play more things by ear than Beethoven did by sight! I may mosey on down to the Civic Service Stadium to check out some of the concerts that are going on. Or maybe I will try my luck down at the ol' fishing hole. Whatever the case may be, I will be proudly celebrating our great Canadian Heritage the best that I can! Oh, and I will be sure to find a cake somewhere to help me celebrate!

Another Case of the Mondays? Take in One Blog and Call Me in The Morning!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! I would like to start this morning with a little stretching session. My reasoning, it's something different (for me at least) and I can use all the help in the world jump starting my noodle mass (aka brain). The coffee regimen seems to be losing effectiveness on the Alertness Battlefront, and I am weary of increasing the amount of Coffee I take in due to the diuretic nature of the illustriously and highly sought after bean! So here we go ... Please feel free to follow along as I vividly depict the actions I am undergoing!

I am standing up now, I have cleared all debris and obstacles that will limit my range of motion or inflict injury. Oh, wait a moment, gotta tuck in my shirt, I want to keep this office friendly. I am taking a deep breath through the nose, holding it for a count of five and slowly releasing the air through my mouth. Mmmm, that feels nice. I am going to do that again. Breath in, hold... and breath out. Now I am going to attempt to bend over and touch my toes. Wish me luck! Slowly dropping forward... Oh oh! Did you hear that? I think I just split my pants! One second... Yep I did. Looks like the stretching will have to be continued at a later date (for me anyways). As I leave to go change pants, I would like to wish all of you a Happy Monday!

How I long for you my Lady Byng
You make me smile, you make me sing
On the ice I dare not pout
I dare not fight, I dare not shout
For you are the fairest lady of them all
And only true gentlemen can hear your call
Your shine warms my heart as I watch you glisten
While to your rules I adhere, I listen

To have you come and watch my game
But as I sit here my chances fade
With this little mistake that I have made
For I know now what not to do
When a referee blows a call or two!

Helping teams achieve full potential

Old King Clancy was never fancy
But ethics and hard work he knew
He hoped to inspire the League in its entire

And the Winner Is...

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! I would like to begin by noting the plethora of blogging sustenance that currently blankets the Hockey World. Where do I begin? As I look around the room for an appropriate setting to set the proverbial anchor (to stop my illusive ship of imagination from sailing beyond the point of no return), I realize why not just start writing! I can then skillfully dissect the literary dissertation through the process known as "editing" with the end result being a more jumbled piece than what was originally created! Satisfied with my great reasoning, I commence!

The Hockey Hall of Fame has announced its 2010 inductees which include some long awaited selections. From the builder's category: Jim Devellano and D.C. "Doc" Seaman are to be inducted in November 2010. From the player's category: all-star Dino Ciccarelli has been selected along with Angela James and Cammi Granato. What makes the later two inductees so special is they are the first ever women inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame! I would like to congratulate all the 2010 inductees on behalf of myself and Hockey Heritage North!

Tonight is also a special night from the NHL's perspective! Tonight is the 2009-2010 NHL Awards Night whereby the League honors its top players, coaches, officials and teams in great style and fashion. There will be super shiny trophies, music, and more! With such a developed and skilled class of players to choose from, there will be some difficult choices to be made in the selection of some of the award recipients. I wish everyone good luck and look forward to seeing who lands what tonight! Oh ya, and I also look forward to the snacks I will be having as I watch the awards night! I may also award my roomie (aka my mom) with an inaugural (and long overdue) award - The "Tiny Tommy" Trophy - for the Consistently Loudest Live (and televised) Sports Mother of the Year! Congratulations mom - You Are The Best!

Psst. I think the League is on Energizer - They Keep Going and Going...

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! If this is down time for the League (NHL), I would have burnt out long ago! With the Stanley Cup Victory still vividly playing in the minds of the players and fans, the League continues its quest for victory with the 2010-2011 season in mind. What a busy weekend for NHL. I am ready to call it a day just looking through all the transactions that have happened since Friday. Here is just a taste of what has happened for those unaware:

Rob Blake retiring after a 20 year career; - I hate to see him go, he's a great Canadian and a great defense man;
Habs trade Halak for two prospects; - Confused here: did he not just lead his team deep into the playoffs knocking off two First Place Teams?
Arnott traded back to the New Jersey Devils; - Rejoining his old club, this should be some good hockey;
Parent traded for Hamhuis; - With Hamhuis to be an unrestricted free agent come July 1st, will he stay or will he go? I guess time will tell;

And Big News from the Hockey Heritage North's Honored Members File: Claude Noel, a former Kirkland Lake resident, is headed to Manitoba to be Head Coach of the Manitoba Moose. He was interim Head Coach of the Columbus Bluejackets for the end of the 2009-2010 season. Mr Noel, we here at HHN wish you a very positive and prosperous future with the Moose!

These are just some of the transactions happening around the NHL leading up to the July 1st, 2010 Free-Agency "feeding frenzy." After reporting all this, I need a break...

Blades a Blazzin', she rockets down the ice
One thought on her mind, a hat trick would be nice.
She deeks one, two, three players, the goalie now stands alone
Like the dog from ol' Mother Hubbard, the goalie awaits her bone
She winds up, the goalie is set
The puck is fired, now in the net
The fans erupt, the skater leaps
The coaches cheer, the goalie weeps
The alarm rings, she jumps out of bed
Panic leaves, it was all in her head
Relief is felt with subtle confusion
All of this from a Ping Pong Contusion

I woke up this morning and could have sworn that it was Wednesday, but according to the Calender on my desktop (and my Boss) it is Thursday, June 17th, 2010 all day! Wow, where has time gone? Did I sleepwalk into a wormhole? Couldn't have, I made it to work the past three days (according to the log books). I got it! Maybe I am a sleep "worker," mentally sleeping as my body carries out the daily work routine that I have become so accustomed to! When all else fails, I blame things on the Leprechauns! There are clever, tiny beings always up to mischief and shenanigans!

But what is not hard to believe is the fun that is had when strolling through Hockey Heritage North. Don't believe me? Swing on by and see for yourself! Anytime is a great time to swing by, but if you are looking for a special guest appearance make your way down on Saturday, July 3rd, at 12:00pm and you may just bump into Daren Puppa! I Can See The Horizon ...

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! For all the non-hockey fans out there, you can almost see the Hockey-Free Horizon off in the distance. With the taste of sweet victory now caressing the lips of the 2009-2010 NHL Champions, all that remains of the 2009-2010 Official Season is the NHL Awards Night taking place Thursday, June 17th, 2010, all the way From L.A. But do not get too excited yet, the 2010 Entry Draft is lurking just around the corner. After June 26th, the world of NHL Hockey will lie dormant, at least to the untrained eye.

For those with keen hockey senses, we know that summer can be an exciting time! General Managers have a busy time with the Free-Agent and Trade Markets Grand Opening! It is like Boxing Days for GM's, with players becoming free-agents and available for purchase (contact wise of course). It will be interesting to see how things will shape up for the 2010 - 2011 NHL Season! I know that I will be watching my Leafs diligently, noting all changes to the roster. With the Leafs now holding the longest Stanley Cup Drought record, I am eagerly awaiting the Triumphant Victory!

In the mean time, I will continue my quest as the Hockey Heritage North Conference Event Coordinator bringing forth events for all to enjoy; such as the HHN Beach Party on July 2nd. It will be great and glorious times with Music, Food, A Side-walk Sale, and a Giant Inflatable Slide! There will also be some Live Entertainment! Stay tuned for more information ... and maybe a fancy poster!

Black Hawks Win!!! The Children Are Going Wild!!!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! It's official... The Chicago Blackhawks are the 2009-2010 Stanley Cup Champions!!! I would like to take this time to send out our Congratulations to the Chicago Blackhawks for this great accomplishment. I would also like to send out our best wishes to Claude Giroux for a valiant effort with his Philadelphia Flyers. Claude you did a fantastic job! Hockey Heritage North is proud of your efforts!

I would also like to discuss another anomaly occurring today at Hockey Heritage North. As I entered the facility this afternoon, I was greeted by hoards of young children. The had taken over the building -- or so it seemed. As I made my way through the excitement and the chaos I was reminded of the Rental going on. As hairy scary as it seemed at that moment, I was reminded I was not in Oz and I did not rudely stumble upon a Munchkin Convention; rather, it was a huge hit for parents and children alike. Kirkland Lake and area will also benefit immensely from the fair, providing parents and parents-to-be with the necessary awareness o the support programs available to them.

Surrounded by the sound of children's songs playing through Hockey Heritage North's sound system I am slowly gaining comfort and regaining focus regarding my tasks at hand. It is so hard to concentrate with the addictive aroma of freshly popped popcorn gently swirling throughout the facility, and knowing that there are games and face painting happening just around the corner! It is taking every ounce of strength to stay on task, but so far so good! I must continue on with my daily duties -- wish me luck.

Flyers on the Brink... What do You Think?

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! If the 2010 Playoffs have proven anything it is that you cannot count anyone out until the Buzzer goes at the end of Game 7! And I can only imagine that the Flyers are banking on the 2010 Playoff trends to hold true, down 3 games to 2 in the Stanley Cup Finals. The "Rally Caps" are on, the trinkets are out; I guess it is up to the teams (and the officiating) to determine whether or not Philly stays to play another day! But enough with the "do or die" dialogue; there is another topic very dear to my heart that I would like to discus today .... PARTIES!

Yes, you read that right, I would like to discuss parties, in particular a party that will be happening Friday, July 2nd, 2010, here at Hockey Heritage North. For those that may be outside the circle of knowledge, the Kirkland Lake Festivals Committee will be hosting Homecoming from June 28th to July 4th. During the celebrations, HHN will be hosting a Beach Party. "Why a Beach Party?" you may be asking. It's simple, everyone likes a party and we have an incredible amount of some of the softest beach sand ever to have graced HHN grounds! There will be food, music, live entertainment, games, a giant inflatable slide and for the first time ever at Hockey Heritage North we will be unveiling the New HHN jersey available to the public with the option of having it personalized! "Tres Cool," is it not? I will provide further details as we approach THE DATE! It is going to be totally AWESOME! So please stay tuned! That is it from me now!

Fuzzy Feeling Friday: Soul Melting Poetry!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! We have made it to our second "Fuzzy Feeling Friday!" YEAH!!!!! Today, I would like to dedicate this Pot-Pori Poetry to the Game three Hero: Claude Giroux.

He Shoots... He Scores!

With the Crowd on their feet he take the pass

He struggles down the ice, but does so with class

He wobbles, he weaves, as his skates clench the ice

Shedding blood, sweat and tears he has paid his fair price

He slips, he falls, but he gets straight back up

With the vision of him and the Great Stanley Cup

He continues to skate with the puck on his stick

His fundamentals are shaky, he knows no big trick

The defence men part ways so he would no get caught

With the lane now wide open, he sets up for the shot

The puck is hit with maximum strength

As the puck slowly trickles for what seems like great length.

The Buzzer sounds and he leaps with great joy

Just a shot on net was enough for this boy!

He will never forget how he felt that day

When his coach gave him a shift-- when he was able to play!

He hung up his skates never netting a goal

But was the happiest kid -- for being given a role!

The Sherwood Lament

You cut me down and strip me bare

My limbs chopped off without a care

Through buzzing teeth, I am coaxed and shoved

Cold and Jaded, I don't feel loved

Wrapped in fibreglass and touched up with paint

"Hot & Dry" by Mother Nature

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! It looks like Mother Nature has an answer to Katy Perry's "Hot & Cold" song--"Hot & Dry!" What a fantastic Spring we have been experiencing here in Northeastern Ontario! Although looking out my window at the moment, it looks as though the "Hot & Dry" may temporarily be replaced with some Soggy Bottom Blue! But I welcome it with open arm. The bush is dryer than my grandmother's muffins! Now that's dry!!!!! But I digress.

We all have our own ways of keeping cool! One way I like to keep cool is by sitting in front of the television with a fan on watching...you guessed it, Penguins sliding on their bellies! But when that is not on I settle with some good ol' fashion Playoff hockey. And what a series we have going. Chicago may be up two games, but it is still anyone's series! Just last year, the Pittsburg Penguins had lost their first two games to Detroit and managed to come back and take the cup! I think it is safe to say that we have some good watchin' coming up with these next few games.

In the meantime, stay cool mommy/daddy-os!

The Word of The Day is: "Elimination!"

Greetings fellow Bloggies/Bloggettes! It is with a heavy heart that I report to you today that the Habitants de Montreal have been eliminated from the 2010 Playoffs. Let us take a minute to remember our favourite highlights from the Canadian 2010 Playoff run. Okay, I am done!

What an exciting series ahead: The Flyers of Philadelphia vs. The Blackhawks of Chicago! Both teams are quick on their feet and are hard hitting! Oh ya, and they both can score!!! Who will jump out on top first? Will it be a long drawn battle or a quick "one-two" combo, leaving the other team dazed and confused (although it may not take much with some of the players already willing their way through the residual from some heavy hits). Whatever the case, there will be a new Stanley Cup Champion crowned come June 2010!

I would like to wish the Flyers and the Blackhawks a safe and exciting Stanley Cup Fina. I would like to extend our sincerest congratulations to Claude Giroux for making it to the Stanley Cup Finals! We wish the best of success, health and well wishes!

Toew-ing The Road To Success! OR Kane Is Able! - You Choose The Title

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! No matter how you put it, the Chicago Blackhawks are well on their way to claiming a Western Conference Championship. After perusing over the current Playoff statistics, it is no wonder the Blackhawks are where they are, with both Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane in the Top 3 Playoff Point Leaders. And if we expand the realm to the Top 10 Point Getters of the 2010 Playoffs, Patrick Sharp squeezes in at #9. I would like to point out that 2 of the 3 fantastic players mentioned above are proud to support the RED & WHITE! Yes, Canada, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp are cut from Canadiana Cloth!

Upon further exploration of this highly sought after list, I have uncovered another "Precious Gem" hidden amongst the shimmer and glamour of the more prominent stones. Coming in at #13 is a battle horse with soft hands and the ability to capitalize on the smallest of chances. He can be often overlooked, but never outplayed!!! I am talking about Mr. Claude Giroux! Accompanied only by fellow teammates Danny Briere and Mike Richards, Claude Giroux is the third highest points getter for the Flyers in these Playoffs. He is currently ranked at #13 on the 2010 Playoffs Points List. Not only is 13 my favorite number, but it also happens to be filled with the sole HHN Honored Member left playing in the 2010 Playoffs. Hats off to you Mr. Claude Giroux! Continue the GREAT work and may this season finish with great success and in great health!

"Its Been One Week Since You Blogged For Me ..."

Greeting Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! It has been way to long since my last blog! Please accept my sincerest apologies from the depths of my heart. How dare I make you, my adoring and ever-faithful followers, wait in agonizing anticipation for the next tidbit of rich & fertile Scholarly-esk "magnum opus." I am not sure what "magnum opus" means, but it sounds fancy! Now Back to the Blog!

It has been a week since I last provided you with some entertaining reading for I was on the road wearing one of my many hats. But along the way, there was a consistent theme present no matter where I wondered. Many individuals from all walks of life have come together, despite their allegiances, to cheer on our beloved Canadiens through the 2010 Playoffs. I have witnessed the Greatest of Leaf fans toss their differences aside to proudly cheer on their arch rival - as the last Canadian Franchise rallying for the Stanley Cup. Some have argued that many of the American Teams have stronger Canadiana Content, but I think it is quite fitting that the Canadiens, during their 100 years anniversary, have accomplished the impossible, yet again! So to you, our illustrious Canadiens de Montreal, I Salute!

I would also like to salute Claude Giroux - HHN's last Honored Member to be playing in this year's Playoffs!

Betty White on SNL? Habs tie their Series? I Wonder If It's All Related?

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! There have been some strange anomalies occurring throughout North America as of late! I am not complaining, nor do I want to! I am attempting to make a conscious effort not get any closer to the gift horse for fear of the repercussions of accidentally seeing what is in its mouth. Most of these rare occurrences have been vital to the uplifting of the human spirit.

For those totally lost as to what I am talking about, there is no need to fear, I have yet to fall off my rocker, although I came close yesterday......but I digress! What I am attempting to uncover is the mystery regarding Betty White's hosting of Saturday Night Live this past Saturday and the Montreal Canadien's "Cinderella Story."

For those who missed Saturday's airing of Saturday Night Live, Betty White, at the very young and tender age of 88 and a 1/2 years, hosted the show (and did a fantastic job at that). Betty White accredited her hosting success to the support of "Facebook" members who helped "vote her in" as the Host with the Most! Holding nothing back, Betty White fearlessly attacked every skit with precision and skill, successfully executing her roles with fineness and style! - much like the story of the Montreal Canadiens!

Who would have thought that the last place team in the Eastern Conference would be on the brink of battling for the title of Eastern Conference Contender for the ultimate supremacy in the NHL? Is this a coincidence - you know, with the Montreal celebrating their 100th Anniversary and all? Or, could this phenomenon we are all witnessing be much more than just "destiny?" Who knows for sure? All I know is that I like it! In the great words of our beloved Canadian comedian, Jim Carey, "I like it a lot!"

So as I "Carey" on with my day, I am left to wonder: "What else will this Year bring me?" I wait in anticipation to see what will unfold before me!

Could This Be The Final Curtain Call For Philly?!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! I don't know about you, but it sure looks to me like Detroit has come to Life?! Are the Wings using the Classic "Rope-A-Dope" tactic used by Ali & other Great Boxing Legends? Who Knows!!!! All I know is that Detroit came ready to play & play they did! Congrats to HHN Honored Member - Todd Bertuzzi - racking up 5 Points in last night's affair!

As for the Pittsburgh/Montreal series, it looks as though the victory will depend on the depths of the benches and the gas left in the tanks of the players. The valiant display of tenacity and determination has lead to a jostled collection of crucial calculations, thus, the temporary stalemate. Will Montreal & Pittsburgh utilize the full 7 game schedule to determine a Victor? I guess we will have to wait and see!

Tonight's match up between the Hawks & the Canucks is a crucial game for the Vancouver crew. They can either tie things up or throw their backs to the wall for the remainder of the series. I know, I know, you are probably thinking: "Thank you Captain Obvious for pointing out yet another 'deeply insightful' point!", but it is a reality! This game can either make or break the Canucks.

Pardon me while I continue to state more "Obviousness!" Boston can close out their series tonight against the Flyers. Two teams plagued by injuries throughout the Playoffs, squaring off, as did the Titans in Greek Mythology, battling for ultimate supremacy and a chance to represent their Conference in Hockey's Ultimate Showdown! I must admit my bias, yet again, shines brightly on this series. With Claude Julien at the helm for the Bruins - an HHN Honored Member - I would like to see Boston move to the Conference Finals with the opportunity to play for Lord Stanley's Cup!

There you have it folks; yet another compilation of intellectually stimulating and soul reaching Internet Gobbledygook! Yes, I just used "Gobbledygook!"

Still Looking For my Mystical Bag Of Answers! Have You Seen It?

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! I have yet to discover the significance of the May Showers, but rest assured I will not give up on my quest for this knowledge.

On another note, has anyone seen my magic bag of answers? Mother's day is coming up and I need to know what I should do for my mother. She is a very unique individual! She does not care much for personal pampering. As for her horticultural connectivity, she is not one with the Greenery. The House Plants all know her as the Angel of Death; therefore, flowers are out of the question. As for olfactory stimulation through perfumes and scented oils, I think she rather smell of camp fire and cedar wood shavings. She is a great fan of the Outdoors and has recently developed a passion for Wood Working! Therefore, I ask this: "Is it wrong then to take my mother out to the Camp, make her a great BBQ meal and present her with a piece of wood as my Mother's Day gift to her?" I am running out of time & options!

Just a couple interesting facts!

In 1970-71 Phil Esposito became the first NHL player to score 50 goals and 50 assists in the same season. He finished the year with 76 goals and 76 assists.

NHL veteran Eddie Shack scored 20+ goals in a season five times during his career -- with five different NHL teams. He scored 26 goals with Toronto, 23 with Boston, 22 with LA, 25 with Buffalo and 25 with Pittsburgh.

On Dec 15, 1982, Chicago's Tony Esposito became the first goaltender in franchise history to record 400 wins as a member of the Black Hawks.

Happy Birthay to Honoured Member Sean Whyte from Sudbury!

Sean has played Professional and Junior Ice Hockey for over 15 years, as well as 6 seasons of Professional Roller hockey. During his career, he has amassed over 1032 games, 339 goals, 530 assists, 869 points and 1442 minutes in penalties. He has won 4 League Championships and 1 World Championship Gold Medal for Team Canada.

Sean was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1989 and played with them during the seasons of 1991-92 and 1992-93. While in their farm system with the Phoenix Roadrunners, he led his team in scoring one year and also made the IHL All-Star Team. When the Roadrunners folded in 1996, the fans voted Sean to the All-Time Roadrunner All-Star Team as top Right Winger. As well as playing for other teams across the continent, Sean finished his career back in Phoenix with the Mustangs for the last four seasons. During this time, he also had the responsibilities of Assistant Coach, and in 2000, his team won the WCHL League Championship.

For the past 16 years, Sean has been involved in instructing and coaching young hockey players. He has worked for well-known hockey schools such as Can/Am, Huron, and Hawkesbury. Sean owns and runs his own hockey school in Canada, called Northern Edge Hockey School. He has run many other schools, clinics, and private lessons throughout the US and Canada in both ice hockey and roller hockey.

If April Showers Bring May Flowers, What Do May Showers Bring?

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! What a beautiful morning! The sun is shining, the birds are singing with hippos frolicking in the front garden amongst the red and yellow tulips, ever so nimbly I may add, and I now buckle down for yet another productive day here at Hockey Heritage North.

Today's creative Literary Work has been inspired by integral pieces of society's "Raison d'Etre": i) The Weather; and ii) Adages - AKA "Old Sayings!" As I pursued the weather network, attempting to gain insight into Mother Nature's Recipe for weather patterns, for future event planning, I noticed that for the next few days, Wonder Weather (not to be confused with Wonder Woman) has forecasted a dampening Soggy Symphony! Don't get me wrong, it is great if you are a duck, but for those lacking the luxury of plumage, these times can be somewhat trying. But I guess I cannot complain, it is May 3rd, and we are without snow!

As I sat and absorbed the new found forecast, it hit me like a sack of dirty socks: "If April Showers Bring May Flowers, What Do May Showers Bring?" Rest assured, I will leave no leaf unturned until I have an answer for you - my faithful followers!

Happy Birthday!

Birthday wishes today go out to Dick Mattiussi from Smooth Rock Falls! Dick is 72 years young today! Dick is a retired professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the NHL! Mattiussi played 200 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Oakland/California Seals in the 1960s and 70s. He was known as a hard-nosed grinder in the corners and spent much of his career in the AHL. Following 200 NHL games Mattiussi had recorded 8 goals and 31 assists for 39 points. Upon retirement he went on to coach the Rochester Americans of the AHL in the 1975 and 76 seasons.

What Just Happened?

Greetings fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! Yesterday, I awoke with no words to describe the sense of astonishment that I felt! What Just Happened? Did This Really Happen? Somebody please pinch me and awake me from this dream of disillusionment! Could this be the year of the "Underdog?" We will have to wait and watch patiently, with some nerve racking anticipation of course, to see who will ride through town - the noble stead - in this proverbial one horse town!

The NHL Eastern Conference looks something like this: 4th Place Team Pittsburgh Penguins vs. 8th Place Team "Les Habitants;" and the 6th Place Team Boston Bruins vs. the 7th Place Team the Philadelphia Flyers!

As for the Western Conference, not as unpredictable, but they do have some interesting series ahead! As the regular season statistics go: San Jose vs. Detroit - Detroit may prove to be the favored on paper, winning 3 out of the 4 games against the Sharks. As for the Vancouver vs. Chicago series: there seems to be a tighter rivalry between the two teams splitting the regular season series 2 games apiece!

Whatever the results, I hope the series are exciting and injury free!

You will not believe who I just met ... the One & Only Canadian Polka King: Mr. Walter Ostanek!!!! That's Right - "The Walter Ostanek!" What a fantastic experience. There is no describing the glow I am exuding at the moment from this soulful experience! Walter Ostanek, in person, was just here at Hockey Heritage North!

But I have a confession to make ... Walter, if you are reading this, I am sooo sorry for not cluing in earlier into who YOU ARE! You are a Canadian Legend & Icon! But you already know this! Walter, you are cordially invited back to Hockey Heritage North to come and sign our Wall of Fame. I am sorry for dropping the ball on this one, I should of had you sign it while you were here! Again, I am soooo sorry!

Folks, it just goes to show, coming to Hockey Heritage North can be a life altering experience. You just never know who you will run into here!

Playoffs & Gardening – You Diggin’ It?

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! As I stick my head out the window to breathe in some revitalizing, fresh spring air, I am presented with the most fitting of Blog ideas: no, I am not blogging about stooping and scooping, instead I will be talking hockey and gardening! I know, I know, it sounds as exciting as watching dust gather on a window sill, but here me out.

Hockey and gardening have a great deal in common. The most important aspect starts in the spring: planting your garden. For hockey fans, this entails a complex combination of skill and availability. What I am referring to is the Entry Draft: the start to any franchise! It is vital for a flourishing NHL franchise to draft or “plant” the right prospects in order to grow a fuller and more fruitful garden. With some of the top prospects sown in Canadian Soil, it is very exciting to be a Canadian Hockey Fan and watching our neighbors, friends, relatives and fellow countrymen make it into this elite league of extraordinary gentlemen.

Hockey and Gardening also share in the adage: “You Reap What You Sow!” Translated it means, hard work and dedication, with so good ol’ TLC (Training, Lots of sweat & Carbs), will yield better results. I could go on with all types or parallelisms, but I do not want to overwhelm you with my lack of gardening “savoir-fair” and the destruction of your perception of the game!

This day in hockey history! April 21st

1938 Toe Blake scored the winning goal in overtime, as Montreal beat Detroit 5-4 before a crowd of 8,000 in Earlscourt, England, in the first of a nine game European tour between the two teams. Games were played in England and France.

1951 Toronto's Bill Barilko scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal at 2:53 of overtime to defeat Montreal 3-2 in Game 5 of the Finals. It was the only Stanley Cup series in NHL history in which every game ended in overtime.

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! What a gorgeous day! And what a spectacle the Playoffs have become. Can you believe each Conference has some major upsets in the making? I know it's "Early," "Anything can happen," and "it ain't over until the glandularly challenged, robust-esk lady with the great personality sings," but hey, the statistics are proving friendly to those in the lead at the moment! Besides, it is the rise of the so called "underdogs" that help make the playoffs what they are - extremely unpredictable and exciting to watch.

I must admit, I am guilty of not paying closer attention to the games, as I have a great deal of "wading" to do as I traverse through the proverbial pool of life. Unfortunately, on my list of To Do's, watching Playoff Hockey must remain a few rungs lower on the ladder of responsibilities. But I am grateful for Sports Highlights and the wonderful invention of the cyber source - the Internet~! I rely so heavily upon it to keep me updated on the status of the quest for the Stanley Cup. That, and I enjoy following our beloved Toronto Blue Jays as they continues their journey towards Baseball's World Series Championship Title. If it were not for the Blue Jays, in '92 & '93 I would not have witnessed and experienced the joys of celebrating the success of a professional sports team that I choose to associate myself with, despite having no direct connection with or contribution to, in any way. It is one of life's little mysteries! But I digress!

As the NHL playoffs move forward, I continue to cheer on the HHN Honored Members as they strive for excellence in the pursuit of ultimate success! Go Fellows Go!

Today in the spotlight is..................KAY WHITMORE

Kay Whitmore (born April 10, 1967 in Sudbury, Ontario) is a former Canadian ice hockey goaltender.

Kay Whitmore was drafted 26th overall in the 1985 Entry Draft by the Hartford Whalers. Three seasons later in 1988-89, he played his first three games at the NHL level.

On October 1, 1992, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for Corrie DAlessio and cash. That season, he played 31 games behind Kirk McLean and helped the Canucks win the Smythe Division season title. Whitmore went 18-8-4 with a 3.10 GAA. In 1993-94, he played 32 games and posted an 18-14-0 record. In the playoffs, he helped his team win the Clarence Campbell Bowl in the Western Conference finals before losing to the Rangers in the Stanley Cup finals. In the shortened 1994-95 season, Kay played eleven games for the Canucks.

March 20, 1996, saw Whitmore traded to the New York Rangers for Joey Kocur. On September 10, 1997, he signed as a free agent with the San Jose Sharks. On June 18, 1998, he was traded with a pair of draft picks to the Buffalo Sabres for Steve Shields and a fourth-round draft pick.
Whitmore signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers on August 17, 1998. One year later, on August 25, 1999, he signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins and was soon dealt to the Edmonton Oilers for future considerations. On July 20, 2000, he was traded back to the Boston Bruins for future considerations. On October 17, 2000, Kay played his first NHL game in six seasons (seven saves in 33 minutes). He played five games with the Bruins and won one game (5-4 against the Blackhawks on November 2).

On July 31, 2001, Kay signed as a free agent with the Calgary Flames. Whitmore played Junior A hockey with the Sudbury Legion. In 1983-84, he joined OHLs Peterborough Petes and went 17-8-0 as a major junior rookie. The following season, he paced the league with 53 games by a goalie and 35 wins. In the playoffs, he went 10-4. In 1985-86, he went 27-12-2 with a league-best three shutouts and 2.77 GAA. At years end, he was named an OHL First Team All-Star .

Lonnie is a retired professional hockey player who spent the majority of his career in the IHL but also played briefly in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings, and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He played left wing and shot left-handed.

The Bears Are Not The Only Ones Confused!!!!

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! You will not believe what I saw this morning ... I saw the Black Bear from behind my mother's house put it's night cap on and crawl back into bed - and it told me in its bear-like voice: "Wake me up if the Blueberry thing happens!"

Is this ridiculous or what? What is this, a terrible belated April Fools' joke from dear ol' Mother Nature? "Winter Storm Warning in Effect for Northern Ontario" surrounded by umpteen degree Celsius temperatures ... WOW! But, no use complaining because the weather will have its way like Chemistry with cake ingredients; you know: you put all these ingredients you would not dare to eat on their own together, and the end result .... Mmmmmmm ... Delicious Cake! I guess what I am getting at is: keep everything within arms reach because you do not know what you will be reaching for next!

But on a happier note: it is Friday! Yeah!!!!! Hockey & Basketball playoffs are starting soon! Yeah!!!!!! Baseball is underway! Yeah!!!!! And ... I got nothing!

Instead, HHN is looking to host its annual Ladies Spa Day: Saturday, May 29, 2010, and would like to invite all of you to this fantastic, LADIES ONLY, event!

Gentlemen, why not take advantage of this opportunity to treat your wife, partner, girlfriend, lady friend, sister, mother, aunt (or whomever it is you owe an I.O.U. to) to an afternoon of Bliss! Did you know this about some of our honoured members?
Billy Coutu received a lifetime suspension for assaulting referee Jerry LaFlamme and assistant Billy Bell after the last game of the 1927 finals.

Phil Esposito of the Boston Bruins was the first player to record 100 points in the NHL - March 2, 1969.

Wilf Paiement from Earlton scored the NHL 's 100,000th goal on October 12,1980.

How about hockey in general?
Before 1914, referees used to place the puck on the ice between the players’ sticks for face-offs. This led to many cuts, bruises, and even broken hands for the referees. Starting in 1914, the referees were allowed to drop the puck between the players’ stick.

In the 1920s the average size of our players was 5 '9 " and 168 lbs. In the 1990s it was 6 '1 " and 202 lbs.

Hockey pucks are frozen before being used in play, because the RUBBER with which they are made is too bouncy otherwise.

Birthday wishes today go out to Trevor Halverson from White River, Ontario!

Trevor was born April 6th, 1971 and was drafted by Washington in 1991. Halverson took a roundabout route into a Caps sweater. He played for a number of different minor league teams before being claimed from Washington by Anaheim in the 1993 Expansion Draft. He then floated around the IHL and the AHL until being signed as a free agent in 1998 by the team that originally drafted him.

With the thermometer on the rise and the ever-shining sun illuminating our lives, I think it is safe to say that Spring has more than Sprung, it seems to have taken full root and is blossoming into what looks to be a great summer. Hello? Meteorologist ... I Think There Has Been a Mistake!

Greetings fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! I want to start with a question: "Is it just me or did Jack Frost nip at your nose too whilst heading out the door this morning?" What a rude awakening, but I guess that is to be expected with the wacky weather we have been experiencing! The warm & gentle embrace of the sun was great while it lasted! Let's hope that there are fewer cold snaps and more warm fronts heading our way!

Speaking of warm fronts, I have been warming up my HD channels for ... you guessed it ... PLAYOFF Hockey! Yee Haw!!!!! I must admit that the Playoff Bug has wasted no time nestling itself securely in the depths of my hockey passionate bosom eagerly awaiting to share with the world a boisterous war cry ... "GOALLLLLLL!" as the team I cheer for loses in Overtime :(

It is important to remember: we may be defenseless when it comes to battling the illusive elements outside, but you always have control of what is on your TV!

March 24, 1946 Montreal's Toe Blake scored twice and added two assists in the Canadiens' 8-2 win over the Black Hawks, in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Semi-Finals, in Chicago.

March 24, 1973 Goaltender Tony Esposito recorded his 36th career shutout to lead the Black Hawks to a 7-0 win over the Atlanta Flames at Chicago Stadium. Jim Pappin scored a goal and set a team record with four second period assists.
March 24, 1978 Phil Esposito set an NHL record with his 29th career hat trick and added an assist, as the Rangers beat Washington 11-4. Espo broke the mark of 28 hat tricks set by Bobby Hull.
March 24, 1984 Detroit's Ivan Boldirev scored four goals (his 11th and final career hat trick) and added an assist, as the Red Wings lost at Los Angeles, 9-7.

Today in the spotlight is Daren Puppa!
Daren Puppa's native Kirkland Lake has been to hockey what great soil has been to farmers, a fertile place with a history of healthy crops. Long after names like Duff, Backstrom, Watson, and Hillman had moved on to the NHL, Puppa stepped onto the ice and established a reputation as a talented youngster known primarily only by the locals. And although the Belleville Bulls of the OHA drafted him, Puppa had his sites set on obtaining a scholarship with an American university. He eventually settled on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York State where he attended classes and backstopped the schools hockey team from 1983 to 1985.

Having chosen an academic path, Puppa remained unknown to most scouts and to the Central Scouting Bureau of the NHL. His discovery occurred in 1983 when his fathers cousin, former Montreal Canadiens star Ralph Backstrom, then the head coach of the University of Denver, had called Sabres GM Scotty Bowman to inquire about a Swedish goaltender. During the conversation, Backstrom mentioned his disappointment about not having been able to entice Puppa to play in Denver. Bowmans ears immediately pricked up at the thought of a goaltending sleeper coming out of Kirkland Lake. In response, Bowman sent his scouting spies up into Ontario to get second, third and fourth opinions about his secret prospect. As the picture became clearer, Bowman had a hunch that Puppa was worth the risk. He drafted him, sight unseen in 1983.
With the Sabres, Puppa made an instant splash in his NHL debut, shutting out Wayne Gretzky and the Oilers 1-0. But the bigger challenge he faced was to wrestle the number-one stoppers post away from incumbent Tom Barrasso. That took three years of patient waiting.
He finally got the starting job in 1989-90. As a strong, stand-up goalie in the tradition of Ken Dryden, Puppa won 31 games and was runner-up to Patrick Roy in balloting for the Vezina Trophy. But over the three seasons that followed, Puppa struggled to regain his form. He had a tendency to allow bad goals, especially through the five-hole, a favorite target for NHL shooters. In 1993, he was shipped to the Leafs where he played eight games before being claimed first by the Panthers and then by the Lightning in the Expansion Draft of 1993. Puppa assumed starting duties with Tampa Bay for his first three seasons. By year three, his strong goaltending began to reflect itself in the win/loss column as he racked up 29 wins, 19 losses, and nine ties, topped off by the Lightnings first trip to the playoffs in 1996.
But from that point on, a nagging back injury created havoc for Puppa. He managed to hang in with the club over the four seasons that followed but was able to appear in a total of only 50 games. He then hung up his pads for good in 1999-2000.

But before I put away my one piece Long-Johns and my woolly socks, I eagerly await the distinct tune of a long awaited avian friend - The Robin.

1965 Toronto's Red Kelly scored his 4th (and final) career hat trick and an assist, George Armstrong had two goals and two assists, and Andy Bathgate added a goal and three assists in the Maple Leafs' 10-1 win over the Rangers, at New York.

1971 Goaltender Tony Esposito recorded his 23rd career shutout to lead the Black Hawks to a 2-0 win over Detroit at Chicago Stadium.

1973 Chicago's Jim Pappin scored the game-winning goal for the 200th of his NHL career, in a Black Hawks' 6-2 win against the visiting Buffalo Sabres.

Happy Birthday to HHN Honoured Member Bob Nevin! Robert Frank Nevin (born March 18, 1938 in South Porcupine, Ontario) is a former professional ice hockey right wing who played 18 seasons in the NHL between 1957–58 and 1975–76.

FUN FACT: In 2009, Nevin was ranked No. 51 on the all-time list of New York Rangers in the book 100 Ranger Greats (John Wiley & Sons).

Greetings Fellow Bloggies/Blogettes! Today’s Blog comes to you straight from the Emerald Isle – at least that’s where I be today in my mind - for the day brings with it Song & Dance of Yesteryear on this the Day of Irish Pride – St. Patrick’s Day!

Tis but once a year when Leprechauns have the chance the peep their wee heads out of ye ol’ tree stumps (and their other hiding spots) and dip their glasses in the Streams of Killarney and wet their weary whistles without worrying ‘bout losing their pots of Gold. At least that’s what me ol’ granddad used to tell me! For everyone is caught up in celebrating St. Patrick’s victory over the snakes of Ireland!

However you choose to celebrate this day, may it be in good health & spirit! And may we all find our “Pot of Gold” throughout life’s living RAINBOW!

Craig Duncanson (born March 17, 1967 in Sudbury, Ontario) is a former professional ice hockey left winger. He was drafted in the first round, ninth overall, by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. He played thirty-eight games in the National Hockey League: twenty-eight over five seasons with the Kings, seven with the Winnipeg Jets in the 1990–91 season, and three with the New York Rangers in the 1992–93 season.

4/16/1954 Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

He played 455 career NHL games, scoring 86 goals and 196 assists for 282 points. His father was a local mail carrier and hockey coach who helped produce great NHL players (e.g., Ron Francis). Zuke played for his hometown Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the NOJHA earning First Team All-star recognition in 1972 before attending Michigan Tech where he again earned All Star berths in 1974, 1975, and 1976. He was selected by the Indianapolis Racers in the 1974 WHA draft and was also selected by the St. Louis Blues in the 1974 NHL draft. He turned pro with Indianapolis during the 1976-77 season and was traded to the Edmonton Oilers prior to the start of the following season. The lanky centreman signed with St. Louis prior to the beginning of the 1978-79 season and played with the Blues for five seasons where his scrappy play made him a fan favorite. He also saw time on both the power play and penalty killing units while with the Blues. Hartford claimed him in the 1983 waiver draft and he finished his NHL career with the Whalers in 1985-86 after the better part of three seasons with the club. Zuke returned to St. Louis and became involved in minor hockey and a hockey school instructor after his retirement. He served as an assistant coach of the St. Louis Jr. Blues and became director of the St. Louis AAA Amateur Hockey Association.

Hockey Heritage North Honoured Members put a dent in Hockey History on this date throughout the years!

March 15, 1979 New York's Phil Esposito scored four goals as the Rangers beat the Bruins 7-4 at Boston Garden. It was the 31st hat trick of Esposito's NHL career.

March 15, 1959 Chicago veteran Ted Lindsay became the NHL's all-time leader in career games played, in a 4-1 Black Hawks' loss to the visiting Detroit Red Wings. Linday's 928th career NHL game moved him one ahead of Montreal's Maurice Richard.

March 15, 1989 New York Rangers honored former goaltender Ed Giacomin by retiring his jersey, #1. Giacomin joined Rod Gilbert (#7) as the only two Ranger players to have their numbers retired. Rangers lost 6-3 to the visiting Winnipeg Jets.

March 15, 1975 Chicago's Tony Esposito became the second goaltender in history to record six straight 30-win seasons in the NHL. The milestone (his 30th victory of 1974-75) came in a 5-2 win over the North Stars, in Minnesota.

March 15, 1959 Toronto's George Armstrong scored his first career hat trick as the Maple Leafs won 6-5 over the Rangers at New York.

March 15, 1985 Ron Duguay scored his 9th (and final) career hat trick (in the second period) and added an assist to lead Detroit to a 6-5 win over the Canucks, at Vancouver.

Good day Ladies and Gentlemen! It has been a while, but Hockey Heritage North blogging is back! Today’s topic of interest is inspired by the thawing of Winter’s icy grip and the slow evolution of the reality of Spring. We are also approaching one of hockey’s most illustrious times: PLAYOFFS!

Hockey Heritage North currently has 14 of its members playing in the NHL. We also have 4 coaches leading their teams through the treacherous rinks striving for the opportunity to play for Hockey’s Holy Grail: The Stanley Cup.

As a Leafs Fan, I eagerly await the miracle that they will somehow find their way into the playoffs this spring, but as my mother puts it: “Son, I love you dearly, but this is one boat hope will not make float!”

So as we move closer and closer to the Big Game, I await in anticipation to see who Hockey crowns as “2009 - 2010 King of the Castle.” I cheer on our Honored members, wishing them all the best success.

March 07, 1978 Bill Barber scored to become just the third player in Philadelphia history to score 200 goals with the Flyers; the milestone came in a 5-3 win over the Atlanta Flames.

March 7, 1982 Philadelphia's Bill Barber reached the 750 point mark of his NHL career, as the Flyers beat Washington, 7-1. Goalie Rick St. Croix made 44 saves for the win.

March 07, 1973 Terry Crisp played his first game as a Flyer, and assisted on Bill Flett's tying goal as Philadelphia and the Rangers played to a 2-2 draw.
